The Buff Project

Better Uses For Food

Our MISSION

At The Buff Project, we strive to empower individuals through knowledge and resources that promote food waste reduction. We provide easy methods for reducing food waste that are easily achievable and adaptable from households to workplaces!

Australia's Food Waste Problem

In Australia, approximately one-third of all the food we produce is wasted.  That's food that was grown, transported, packaged, and often never even eaten.

This waste is equivalent to:

💸 $36.6 billion worth of food thrown away every year.
🔩 7.6 million tonnes of food ending up as waste annually.

Around one-third of all food waste comes directly from households, meaning our kitchens are one of the biggest contributors.

On average, every Australian household wastes around 312 kg of food each year—that's roughly one full shopping bag, or $40, of food every week! 🛒

Why does this matter?

🍽️ While millions of tonnes of perfectly edible food are thrown away, many Australians struggle with food insecurity. This overconsumption affects inflation rates for food items due to unreasoned demand!

💧 Wasting food also wastes the water, energy, fuel, and labour used to produce it.

🌱 Food sent to landfill releases methane, a greenhouse gas over 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat over 100 years, contributing to climate change. ♻️

💸 Reducing food waste could save the average household over $2,000 every year, simply by buying, storing, and using food more wisely.

Small actions at home can make a huge difference. By wasting less food, we save money, reduce pollution, and help protect our environment for future generations. 🌍💚

🤝 Together, We Can Make an Impact

One person reducing their food waste is great. Thousands of people doing it together is transformative.

That's why we've made it easy to spread the message. We've created free social media resources, including ready-to-use graphics, stories, posters, and captions that you can download and share with your friends, family, school, or workplace. 📱✨

Of course, you're also welcome to write your own message! Personal stories are often the most powerful. Tell others:

  • 💚 Why reducing food waste matters to you.

  • 💰 How it's helping you save money.

  • 🌱 Why protecting our planet is worth the effort.

  • 🍽️ Why they should join the movement too.

Every post starts a conversation. Every conversation inspires action. And every action brings us one step closer to a future where good food feeds people, not landfills.

Together, let's waste less, save more, and create a future where food is used better. 🌍♻️💚
